Introduction

Sabyasachi Mukherjee was born in 1974, in Kolkata, a metro city in west India. He founded his eponymous brand in 1999, just months after graduating from one of India’s top fashion design institutes, National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kolkata. In 2021, ABFRL, India’s largest fashion conglomerate purchased 51% stake in Sabyasachi for ₹398 crore, valuing the label at roughly ₹780 crore (€88 million at the time). Sabyasachi is now taking his brand global with flagship stores across major fashion capitals of the world.

Sabyasachi’s ensemble made for Indian super star Shah Rukh Khan was rated the best Men’s look of Met Gala 2025, by a reputed global media measurement company. Khan made his Met debut in 2025. Sabyasachi also walked the Met gala red carpet.

2024

Sabyasachi Mukherjee designed actor Alia Bhatt’s Met Gala 2024 look. Alia Bhatt ranked among the top 5 most influential celebrities to walk the Met Gala red carpet in 2024. Sabyasachi also became the first Indian designer to walk the Met Red carpet, himself. His brand became the 12th most visible brand at the Met, trailing just behind Cartier.

2023

Launches the largest (25,000 sq. ft) Indian designer flagship store in southern Mumbai’s heritage district for couture and jewellery. Releases an eyewear collection with Morgenthal Frederics

2022

Sabyasachi opens his first international flagship store in New York City.

2021

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) acquires a 51% majority stake in the brand for ₹398 crore (€ 38.5 million) to scale the brand globally.

2017-2018

Designs wedding ensembles for several high-profile Indian celebrity weddings such as Anushka Sharma & Indian cricketer Virat Kohli, followed by Deepika Padukone & Ranveer Singh and the much talked about Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas. Solidifies the global phenomena of the ‘Sabyasachi bride’
