Valued at about €92.4 million (approx ₹978 crores), Sabyasachi is India’s leading luxury fashion brand. It was founded independently by designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Now, part of India’s largest fashion conglomerate – ABFRL, it is going global while positioning itself alongside historic Western brands that have long dominated luxury fashion. But can an Indian truly succeed in this space?

Sabyasachi’s organic social media growth
In 2016, Sabyasachi became the first major Indian couturier to bypass traditional fashion week events to introduce new collections directly on Instagram. The move was not a rejection of traditional platforms, but a recalibration of authority; Sabyasachi chose to communicate his brand’s vision on his own terms and gather timely feedback, directly from his real audience.
While most luxury maisons were hesitant to use social media at the time, Sabyasachi trusted his instinct and went against the tide.
Drawing inspiration from India’s layered cultural history, he ensured the brand’s imagery remained consistent and uninfluenced by fleeting trends.
The cult of the ‘Sabyasachi Bride’
Wedding wear lies at the heart of India’s couture industry, serving as the key revenue driver for most local luxury brands. Sabyasachi capitalised on this lucrative segment, building a world-class, aspirational brand by blending traditional Indian craftsmanship with global luxury standards.
He created bridal looks that were evocative, unapologetic, distinctive, and dreamy. Rather than a one-time viral sensation, the majestic presentation of his couture repeatedly captured the cultural zeitgeist, establishing a permanent new archetype in India the ‘Sabyasachi Bride’
Celebrity brides drive global brand value
Sabya’s (as he is fondly called in the industry) signature looks began to influence even celebrity weddings. Globally renowned Indian actresses – such as Deepika Padukone (Cartier global ambassador), Anushka Sharma (Michael Kors ambassador), Alia Bhatt (Gucci global ambassador), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Bulgari global ambassador),and Katrina Kaif (Rado ambassador), wore Sabyasachi for their weddings. Their ethereal ‘Sabyasachi Bride’ looks amplified the brand’s reach across social media and attracted extensive global press coverage, generating significant organic, unpaid media impact for the brand.
Wearing his label evolved into a definitive status symbol for modern Indian brides. His clientele began to voluntarily embrace the ‘Sabyasachi Bride’ identity. They documented their own weddings on social media and tagged the brand. By doing so, they infused the brand with an organic authenticity.
The brand deepened this bond by resharing their bridal portraits on its Instagram, strengthening its direct-to-consumer relationship and empowering its bridal community. In doing so, Sabyasachi balanced exclusivity with wide appeal.
Bridal reality show
Long before social media amplified his influence, Sabyasachi weaved his brand as the star of a bridal reality show ‘Band Baaja Bride’ (Celebrations and the Bride) on an Indian entertainment channel.
Sabyasachi played the part of a mentor or ‘fairy-godfather’ where he provided complimentary makeovers to real brides with his couture. The show served as a massive marketing tool. It demonstrated to a wide audience how his signature aesthetics could transform a bride’s big day into a ‘fairy-tale’. His association with the show began in 2012 and went on for 9 seasons.

Sabyasachi hasn’t always enjoyed positive organic reach on social media. In 2021, Sabyasachi faced significant backlash over an ad and social media campaign for its ‘Royal Bengal Mangalsutra’ jewellery collection.
In Hindu tradition, the Mangalsutra necklace represents a sacred wedding thread. It symbolizes the holy marital status of a woman. Sabyasachi’s ad showed models in intimate poses, wearing the necklace. Critics argued that his ad sexualised and disrespected a holy religious necklace.
Following severe backlash from press and politicians, Sabyasachi Mukherjee withdrew the campaign. It later issued an apology, stating that the intention of the ad was to celebrate inclusivity.
