Blancpain The Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe

Last year Blancpain introduced the Bathyscaphe in ceramic. This time, they add an alluring sheen to their popular diving line. The all new Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is now in a plasma gray ceramic case. Yes, it is the same material we loved in the Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback Ocean Commitment back in 2014. Launched at Basel 2016 Blancpain Bathyscape features the iconic three-hand dial.

In a brilliant move, the brand has used a deep and fascinating blue for the dial. Together with the metallic sheen of the plasma ceramic case, it look almost magnificent. The blue ceramic insert with Liquidmetal hour-markers on the unidirectional bezel adds to its legibility. Keeping it going is the famous Calibre 1315. You can take a peek at it through the clear sapphire caseback. We liked the three-ring NATO and sail canvas strap options. Goes well with the whole diving theme.

When watchmaking welcomes traditional artisanal techniques, it takes creativity to a whole new level. Blancpain’s head turner this year is definitely The Great Wave. This Blancpain 2016 Art watch uses Mexican silver obsidian for the first time. It gives the dial a silvery and almost mysterious texture. It also doubles up as a beautiful canvas for “The Great Wave” applique in white gold. The brand uses its favourite Japanese rokushō patina technique for this and the effect is simply breathtaking. For its heart, Blancpain has modified its hand-wound 13R0 Caliber to the new 13R3A movement. The bespoke calfskin strap in storm gray adds to the enigma.
