Independent brands like MBandF, HYT have had a good year in terms of visibility. But all that visibility comes at the cost of high expectations because they have to introduce ‘statement makers’ to keep the buzz going for both SIHH and at their regular fair – Baselworld. MBandF has launched 2 watch series to keep up the interest among visitors at Baselworld 2016, a watch fair that tends to pull more attention that the invite-only-SIHH.

MB&F BASELWORLD 2016 WATCH: HMX BLACK BADGER

Simple question that would come to one’s mind after a quick glance at the attractively weird watch; How does one read time on it? Well, the HMX is actually a 3D watch that tells time through jumping hour and trailing minutes. This watch is controlled by a calibre/engine developed in-house by MBandF, powered by a Sellita gear train.

What’s with the bright colours? For one, they make the watch look really cool at day time. Secondly, they make the watch look cool and glamorous at night! While the colours – Radar Green, Phantom Blue, and Purple Reign – are eye-catching by the day, it’s when the sun goes down that they really come out to party! Light streaming through the transparent-Engine-cover, both, illuminates the top of HMX’s Engine by day. By night the brightly glowing lume provides its own colourful backlight to the time display.

What’s the big deal bout the shine factor in this watch? Other watches too have the luminosity feature. Well, the answer to that is; while Super-LumiNova is a liquid that is applied to surfaces and dries, MB&F Black Badger’s lume comes in solid blocks. Being solid means that there is usually more of it, so that it shines brighter for longer.

How does one read time on this cute little alien machine? Hand-polished watch-hands rotate to indicate hours and minutes on a polished, central dome. The lume-enhanced dome features MB&F’s signature numerals Retrograde seconds: 20-second intervals indicated by double retrograde fly-out cannons emanating from central dome. One can also spot a Power reserve indicator on this bright MB&F watch: a lume-enhanced dome indicator framed by a hand-finished arc. This part provides an intuitive view of remaining energy as it turns 270°: 5 bars, 4 bars, 3 bars, 2 bars, 1 bar (1 bar = 8 days). The HMX table clock which is complemented by a ‘radar dish’ also revolves 270° Lume.

The solid Black Badger luminescent material is on the underside of the external ring. The bright material is also on the hour and minute hands, dome as well as the power reserve dome. Quite a feat this watch is for MB&F. A stunner indeed!
