Sir Alex Ferguson is auctioning some of his fine wines! Collecting wines is a passion, the legend has nurtured, in the course of time. A passion that’s kept him balanced through demanding years, as manager of Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson Wine collection is up for auction at Christie’s, in Hong Kong and London in May and June. A part of Sir Alex Ferguson Wine collection will also be auctioned, online.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s love for football, his eye for talent, and now, his sense of taste. There has to be something that Sir Alex Ferguson does not excel in. The legend has collected a wide, envy inviting assortment of some fine wines, the world has to offer. In his own words: My interest in wine began during a scouting trip in France and, over time, my enjoyment of discovery and collecting grew”. His love for wine helped balance his extremely busy life. Post retirement, he plans to explore this further.

So what does one, with a stature as big as Sir Alex’s do with his wine collection? Well, he auctions it. Sir Alex will share his passion with many others. Christie’s is hoping to raise about £ 3 million via Sir Alex Ferguson’s Wine collection auction. Obviously, most of us would not be able to get our hands on any of them. Oh, and even if we did, at least won’t have the heart to empty it away, ever! Sir Alex Ferguson Wine collection is up for auction at Christie’s in Hong Kong and London.

Here’s a list of what’s going, and for about how much:

Sir Alex Ferguson Wine collection in Hong Kong, May 25, 257 Lots

1) Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 1999, 6 bottles, with Man U Retro Champions League shirt from 1999.  Could fetch between € 60,000-80,000

2)  Petrus 2000, 12 bottle collection for € 40,000-50,000 or HK$420,000–550,000

3) Romanée-Conti Grand Cru 2005 with 6 bottles could demand € 60,000-80,000

4) 6 Litre Imperiale Sassicaia 2005, the label signed “Best wishes, Alex Ferguson” for just €950-1110 or HK$10,000-12,000

5) 6 Litre Imperiale Ornellaia 2006, the label signed “Best wishes Alex Ferguson”  for mere €950-1110 or HK$10,000- 12,000

Sir Alex Ferguson Wine collection: London, June 5, 140 Lots

1)  Pétrus 1996 which are offered alongside a Manchester United Cup Final shirt from 1996 signed “Best wishes Alex Ferguson”- 12 bottles-  € 17,000-24,000 or HK$650,000- 850,000

2)  Pétrus 1998 which are offered with a banner from the 2013 season signed “Best wishes Alex Ferguson” – 12 bottles- € 30,000-35,000

3) Château Latour 2000- 12 bottles- € 9,000-10,000

4) Domaine de la Romanée- Conti Echezeaux 2002 – 6 bottles- € 3,500-4,000

5) Sassicaia 2007 – 12 bottles- € 1,000-1,300

There are another 85 lots that go under the hammer, online, between 9-23 June. 

The collection includes a remarkable range of fine and rare, expensive wines featuring Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Burgundies and many Finest First Growth Bordeaux ranging from the 1986 to 2011 vintages. During this period he earned a FIFA World Club Cup and 2 Euro cups, for his teams.

For all that we could know, I am sure he is emptying his cellars to make room for new ones. Christie’s is hoping to raise about £ 3 million, Sir Alex Ferguson’s wine collection auction.

A small bottle, nectar fit for gods, and a very celebrated history. Cheers to that!
