Aditya Birla Fashion Retail Ltd. (ABFRL) is India’s single largest fashion conglomerate with a turnover of $860.50 million (₹7,354.73 crore). ABFRL is the India partner of Galeries Lafayette and Christian Louboutin. It is also the majority stake owner of India’s most valuable luxury brand – Sabyasachi. Other Indian luxury and premium fashion brands in its portfolio include – Tarun Tahiliani. Shantnu & Nikhil, Masaba and Jaypore.

ABFRL is the fashion retail arm of Aditya Birla Group that recorded a consolidated revenue exceeding US$67 billion (approximately ₹5.6 lakh crore) in FY’25.

What is ABFRL ?

ABFRL is Aditya Birla Fashion Retail Ltd. It is the lifestyle arm of Aditya Birla Group. Aryaman Birla, is the non-executive Director of ABFRL.

ABFRL has built an extensive luxury and premium brand portfolio in India through multi-brand retail concepts, strategic designer partnerships, and exclusive international licenses.

ABFRL operates two premium & luxury multi-brand retail chains in India.

  •  The Collective: an in-house retail concept with 49 stores. It houses premium brands such as Ralph Lauren and Versace.
  • Galeries Lafayette: In 2022, ABFRL partnered with the iconic French store Galeries Lafayette to bring its stores to India. Galeries Lafayette opened its first flagship in south Mumbai in September 2025.

ABFRL also holds exclusive rights to distribute and sell Reebok products in India.

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) started building its premium fashion portfolio in 2008-2009 with the launch of ‘The Collective’ – India’s first multi-brand store to house international labels. Between 2017 and 2023, ABFRL aggressively expanded its fashion portfolio by securing exclusive India-market rights for global brands like Ralph Lauren and Christian Louboutin. ABFRL has also invested in popular Indian designers, including Sabyasachi and Tarun Tahiliani.

Pantaloons: A large department store chain that serves as ABFRL’s ‘masstige’ anchor. It offers over 200 brands, including several in-house labels like Bare, Rig, and Annabelle.

Style Up: A chain of large-format ‘family stores’ (usually 6,000–8,000 sq. ft.) specifically targeting budget-conscious shoppers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.

ABFRL also holds exclusive rights to distribute and sell Reebok products in India.

Milestones

Apr 2026

Following the 2025 demerger, ABFRL implemented a major leadership shift to drive its next growth phase. This included bringing in new executive leadership for its ethnic and luxury divisions. ABFRL also appointed Marco Agnolin (former CEO of Diesel and Bershka) to lead its youth-focused retail OWND!

2026

A second Galeries Lafayette is scheduled to open in Delhi around 2026–2027. ABFRL is also launching a dedicated luxury e-commerce platform to reach customers beyond major cities

2025

Demerger: ABFRL split its brands into two companies. Mass-premium and lifestyle legacy brands, including Louis Philippe, Van Heusen, Allen Solly, Peter England, Reebok India, and casual wear brands like American Eagle were moved to a new entity called Aditya Birla Lifestyle Brands Limited (ABLBL). Meanwhile, ABFRL retained its flagship Pantaloons business, ethnic wear (e.g. TCNS, Jaypore, and Tasva), designer brand partnerships (Sabyasachi, Tarun Tahiliani, etc.), and luxury formats.

Sep 2025

Galeries Lafayette officially opened its first 90,000-square-foot Indian flagship in Mumbai’s historic Kala Ghoda district.

2023

Formed a joint venture (a 50-50 partnership) with the famous luxury footwear and leather brand Christian Louboutin for the Indian market.

2022

In 2022, ABFRL formalised a deal to bring the famous French department store Galeries Lafayette to India. It also acquired a 51% stake in the House of Masaba.

2021

ABFRL bought a 51% stake in India’s iconic luxury brand Sabyasachi. In 2021, ABFRL also launched Tasva, a masstige brand with another luxury Indian designer Tarun Tahiliani.

2019

ABFRL acquired 51% stake in Indian couture brand Shantnu & Nikhil, marking its first  investment in an Indian brand

2013–2018

The Birla group signed exclusive deals to retail international brands – Hackett London (2013), Ted Baker (2017), and Polo Ralph Lauren (2018) in India.

2018

Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) entered into a strategic partnership with Ralph Lauren in 2018. This deal gave ABFRL the exclusive rights to open and operate Ralph Lauren retail stores in India

2016

ABFRL formalised a ‘Luxury & Premium’ division to segregate high-end stores like The Collective, from everyday mass-market brands.

2013

Scaling Premium Retail: The Collective expanded to major metros (Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru) as the go-to destination for international luxury brands, under one roof.

2008-2009

Entry into multi-brand luxury retail: ABFRL launched ‘The Collective’ – India’s first multi-brand concept store to house international luxury labels like Armani, Versace, and Hugo Boss, under one roof.

Who is Aryaman Vikram Birla?

Aryaman Vikram Birla is the son of Kumar Mangalam Birla, who is the Chairman of Aditya Birla group. The Birla family is ranked as India’s 8th richest.

Aryaman serves as the non-executive Director on the board of Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL). He has championed the group’s foray into new-age businesses. He is also a director on the board of the Aditya Birla Management Corporation (the apex body), Grasim Industries, and Hindalco Industries, and leads Aditya Birla Ventures.

Education

Aryaman holds an MBA (Honours) from Harvard Business School and a Master’s in Global Finance from Bayes Business School.

Biggest Milestone

In March 2026, Aryaman took on the role of Chairman of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), a top ranked team – in the world’s most valuable cricketing league – IPL (Indian Premier League). The Aditya Birla Group (ABG) led the consortium that acquired 100% of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for ₹16,706 crore ($1.78 billion), including both the men’s IPL and women’s WPL franchises.

Cricket is the most popular sport in India. Aryaman himself has been a professional cricketer and played at state level in India. He was also part of an IPL team.
