The Premier Blue Diamond

Expected to fetch about US$80 million, an auction of rare & magnificent Jewels and Jadeite, in Hong Kong, will also offer a very rare 7.59 Carat Premier Blue Diamond, this season. The unusual round Blue Diamond will be auctioned at Sotheby’s Hong Kong on October 7 and could cost the bidder more than US$19 million. The internally flawless Blue Diamond will be the star Jewel of the auction. It is the largest vivid Blue Diamond ever graded, by the Geological Institute of America.

This Diamond will be previewed around London, New York and some countries in Asia before it goes under the hammer in Hong Kong. The Blue Diamond is a rare gem. It has an even and saturated pure blue hue and a round cut which is a rare shape for coloured diamonds. Coloured diamonds are rarely cut in round shape, to avoid wastage. Coloured Diamonds are more precious than white diamonds.

In 2011, Sotheby’s sold a 6.01-carat Vivid Blue Diamond at US$1,686,505 per carat in Hong Kong.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in Asia, Sotheby’s will auction a gem collector’s delight – about 330 lots of colourful diamonds and gems, including the Premier Blue Diamond, that are all together expected to gather more than US$80 million.
